Hospital admissions data from England for 2017 show an upsurge in the numbers of patients less than 20 years old who were admitted to hospitals with poisoning from benzodiazepine. At the same time, inquiries for the National Poisons Information Service about the treatment for alprazolam poisoning have risen significantly. PHE has looked into UK police seizure records for the drugs submitted for forensic analysis. This indicated that the number of seizures of alprazolam was much more than in previous years, rising from fewer than ten seizures in 2016 to nearly 800 in 2017.
