Step-by-step guide to activate two-step verification of an Apple ID

The steps that we must follow to activate the verification in two steps in an Apple ID are the following:

  • We access http://appleid.apple.com/ and click on the Manage your Apple ID button.
  • Now we must enter our Apple ID and the password that we already know. Once the data has been written, click on Start Session.
  • In the menu on the left side, click on Password and security.
  • In case we have the security questions configured, we must enter the answers to continue. In case we do not have them, we can skip this step.
  • At this point we will see the option Verification in two steps in the upper right part. We must click on Start… to start the configuration.
  • Apple will show us at this point a summary of how the two-step verification works and then a security warning. If we agree, we must click on Continue in both cases.
  • After these initial verifications we must start with the configuration. In the first step, it tells us that we must have at least one phone number where we can receive SMS. We enter our mobile phone by clicking on Add a phone number. When entering the number we will receive an SMS with a code that we must confirm on the web to continue with the configuration.
  • Once we verify our phone number, the Apple ID website will allow us to also verify our trusted devices. The devices associated with Find my iPhone from our iCloud account will appear and by clicking on the Verify button, the device screen will show a notification with the confirmation code that we must enter on the web to verify it.
  • In the second step it will show us our recovery key. We must write this key down in a safe place and never lose it. In case we have a problem with the two-step verification, it will be very necessary to have it to be able to access our account again.
  • In this step it will ask us to enter our recovery key. This step is used to verify that we have entered the key correctly and that no problems will arise due to writing problems.
  • Now Apple reminds us again of the consequences of activating two-step verification. If we agree, we must check the I understand these conditions box and click on the Activate two-step verification button.

That’s all, after following these steps, the two-step verification will be activated and our Apple ID will be a little more secure than it was before. From the moment of activation, when we identify ourselves in any of the Apple services (iCloud, iTunes Store, App Store, etc, etc…) it will be necessary, in addition to the password, to verify our identity through one of the devices verified or through a code received by SMS.
