How To Grow A Cherry Blossom Tree From a Seed
Cherry plants grown from seed will take between 5-10 years for the tree to blossom. Cherry’s will not produce depending on what variety of seed you use. This is because cherry trees can only be self-pollinating. Cherry varieties that are not self-pollinating must be crossed in order to produce fruit.
This can be either an interesting experiment or a fun way to bond with your loved one. Calvin and I have just planted our tree. It was a fun project that we enjoyed and the bonding experience of caring for the tree has been wonderful. It has revealed a very nurturing side of Calvin to me, as well as my insistent on careful observation. This blog has been born from it.
It’s easy to follow the steps.
- Either collect the cherry pits from cherries you have eaten at home, or order cherry seed online. To plant seeds, ensure they are not dry. The seed will likely have dried out if it feels and looks brittle. You can use fresh cherry fruit seeds.
- The Cherry Blossom Seeds should be planted 2 inches deep in soil and perlite or mulch based soil. To allow roots to grow properly, the soil should be loose and moist. A cherry tree can be damaged or killed by dense soil.
3a. If you are planning to plant outside, space each seed 12 inches apart and plant in autumn. The seeds will become straight over the winter, and then sprout in the spring.
3b. To ensure that at least one seed germinates, plant 2-4 seeds in each pot if you are using a pot. Put the pot in the refrigerator for about 4-6 weeks to encourage stratification during winter. Or, you can place the seeds outside and plant them in the fall. Once the stratification has been completed in the fridge, transfer the pot to a sunny location. The seed should begin to sprout within a few weeks. If you intend to plant it indoors, you don’t need to worry about the time of year. The seeds will sprout as long as they are properly stratified. After being planted in April, the seeds were kept in the fridge for five weeks. The seed grew in May.
Ensure soil is not dry but moist. Water the soil as needed, maybe once every two to three weeks.
- Keep your cherry tree healthy and you will be able to enjoy cherry blossoms and fruit in 5-10 years.
I wish everyone success with their cherry seed planting endeavors
Calvin has created a Cherry Tree Planting Manual in a Microsoft word.doc format that you can get. I will upload it soon.
