CaddyWiper, a new strain of Wiper malware, attacks Ukraine.
Recently, a new strain of Wiper Malware has been identified by researchers. The CaddyWiper malware is the third wiper strain in the series to attack the Ukrainian systems amid the Ukraine-Russia war. This strain was discovered by the cybersecurity researchers of ESET, a Slovak cybersecurity firm. On 14th March 2022, the malware was discovered and ESET posted a thread of tweets about it.
The CaddyWiper is said to erase data on every deployed Windows device, causing great loss to the victims. However, this malware cannot remove information from the domain controllers.
It is reported that the cyber attackers have introduced CaddyWiper into the GPOs (Group Policy Objects) of Microsoft. This means that all the information on the Active Directory service is accessed by the hackers even before the introduction of this malware into the victim’s systems.
As per the research of ESET, the first two invading malware strains, IsaacWiper and HermeticWiper, have data destroying functions. However, CaddyWiper is very different from them. As a method of precaution, Ukraine has advised all national organizations to report all cases of cyberattacks to them.

Before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Microsoft was the first to warn the country about the upcoming Wiper malware attack on the country. Ukraine has experienced a series of cyberattacks since the invasion including ransomware, Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, etc. As a result, Ukraine has recently formed an IT army to counter and prevent such attacks.
How to stay away from Wiper Malware attacks?
There are many ways through which we can avoid Wiper Malware attacks, such as –
- Updation of malware protection tool
- Education and training on cyberattacks
- Regular backing up of data
- Updation of all software
- Cyber awareness
The ongoing cyberattacks on Ukraine make it convenient for other attackers to take advantage of the situation as well. But Ukraine is not the only country that is experiencing these cyberattacks. The nearby European countries that are helping Ukraine against Russia and have given refuge to Ukrainian residents have also become targets of these extreme cyberattacks.
