Major Challenges Faced by People With Disability
Scott Hamilton said, “The only disability in life is a bad attitude.” This is a thought process everyone should have. Crying about things that already happened is not going to help, having a positive attitude towards life and believing that there will a sunrise after every sunset is helpful.
People with disability face enormous challenges daily. Not everyone realizes the small things they have to deal with every day. Here are a few challenges and some basic solutions to them.
Accessibility Issue
This is the most common issue that people with disabilities face on daily basis. For normal people entering a building, climbing a few steps, crossing the street, walking in the park, taking a bus, etc. is a day-to-day thing. We do not require special efforts to go to these places.
But for people with disabilities, it is a challenge. Not all roads or buildings we have, are made for these people. Due to that, they face challenges while entering a building because they might not have ramps and they themselves cannot take the wheelchair up a staircase.
The outside world might take time to be disabled-friendly but till then what they can do is keep portable ramps with them. It will make its way for now.
Eating Problem
Mobility is not the only issue old people face. Even eating is not easy as we think. Shivering hands, blurred vision, posture issues, etc. can make taking a spoon to mouth the most difficult task. Not only eating but handling food, in general, is a difficult task. To open a packaged food, a soda bottle, or cutting vegetables and fruit is challenging.
To make it simpler, they can use cutlery for disabled people. Yes, there is a specially designed cutlery for people with disability issues. These spoons, forks, knives, etc. have thick and textured handles that they can easily hold.
With lower muscle strength, it is difficult to open a bottle cap. But they can use jar openers, bottle openers to open jars and bottles. It will give them the required grip so that they require comparatively less strength. There are also bowls and dishes specially designed so that food does not spill and they have better control over holding it.
Disabled People Feel Left Alone
People with disability often have wheelchairs or any mobility aid with them. And due to that, they need a special area to sit or stand. So they are basically away from where everyone is and cannot communicate with others even if they want to, which makes them feel lonely. Also, some people tend to behave differently or ignore people with disabilities.
Be it school, college, workplace, etc. disabled people have faced teasing, abuse, and whatnot at least once. This directly impacts their self-confidence. It will make them feel they are somewhat less than everyone else in the room.
Well, do not let these thoughts get in their heads. Everyone is born with their own superpower and they don’t need to consider what others say. Just let them enjoy life and ignore the rest.
Final Words
Now that you know how small things can be complicated or difficult for disabled people. Small changes can make their life better. For example, a special area in a bus for wheelchairs, ramps in every building, etc can really make their life easier and things easily accessible. If you see anyone struggling while eating please suggest cutlery for disabled people. This will make cooking and eating food easier than before. You can also suggest them jar openers, bottle openers, etc. to make opening jars and bottles easy. Also, never make a comment on any disabled people that can hurt their feelings. They already have a lot on their plate so they eventually don’t need yours.
