riverside um i’m a bit unique uh being cooperative extension faculty and my lab is actually based off-campus at the Kearney agricultural research and extension centre which is just outside of Fresno I’ve been hemp cream
doing this work in California for about 10 years now and this work on cannabis in particular for probably about four years more recently I’ve also become director of the uc organic agriculture institute which really doesn’t have anything directly involved with cannabis quite yet.

But there is some certification i’m seeing around industrial hemp for uh regenerative organic which which kind of may pull our organic work into the the hemp or marijuana realm at some point you know more generally my my lab is a focused on orchard and vineyard pest management so we do a lot of applied research and extension to develop alternative practices that can reduce the impacts and use of chemical pesticides in agriculture so the focal crops that we work on include almonds pistachio walnut figs grapes and a number of other perennial crops but also cannabis and just listing here a couple of uh different key insect pests we work on in orchards and vineyards so kind of a wide-ranging research program under this umbrella of improving the environmental performance of these uh cropping systems in California some of the the work we do uh as i mentioned it’s really an applied type of research so there’s a whole host of different strategies that we address with our work and just listing some of that stuff here and that’s backed up by other studies.
Hemp & Regenerative Agriculture
The biology or basic ecology of an organism as a way to figure out how we can better intervene for its management and then of course working with industry and other end-users to promote adoption and scaling of key practices so i sort of came into the cannabis space-based initially on my work on vineyard pest management in the north coast there was a lot of marijuana production that i was coming into contact with in hemp cream for pain relief
and around some of these vineyard operations and that was right around the time of legalization in 2016 and some of the informal interactions i was having at the time with growers was really signaling a need for best management practices uh generally in marijuana and hemp production but specifically with regards to pest management so 2015 uh in 2016 i uh worked with van butsik at uc berkeley um where i was at the time doing a post doc to carry out some preliminary meetings with north coast marijuana growers and just discuss ways to engage with the uc um and in parallel some conversations with the university itself about how we could engage with uh both marijuana and and hemp um in 2018 we conducted an online survey of marijuana production with a number of uh collaborators listed here many of them with uc berkeley and that resulted in a publication here i’ve got a screenshot of it on the right first known survey of cannabis production practices in california just as an attempt to get closer to understanding what is happening on these farms because of the the restrictions we have on us kind of preclude our ability to actually go
