Any cause of Azoospermia cannot hold you back from achieving Fatherhood!
What are the different types of Azoospermia and their causes?
Being diagnosed with Azoospermia or hearing the words “no sperms” is often scary. But nothing to worry. Take a deep breath. Having this kind of infertility doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t have biological children.
The causes of Azoospermia are:
Pre-testicular Azoospermia: This is of Non-obstructive type. It may be caused due to certain genetic disorders, damage to the hypothalamus or to the pituitary gland. Taking certain medications or having radiation treatments may also cause this type of Azoospermia.
Testicular Azoospermia: This is of non-obstructive type and may happen due to
• The absence of testicles (anorchia)
• Testicles that haven’t dropped (cryptorchidism)
• Testicles that don’t produce sperm (Sertoli cell-only syndrome)
• Testicles that don’t produce mature sperm (spermatogenic arrest)
• Klinefelter syndrome
• Having mumps in late puberty
• Tumours, radiation, diabetes, prior surgery
• Reactions to certain medications
• Varicocele etc.
Post-testicular Azoospermia:
This is of obstructive type and is seen in about 40% of all Azoospermia cases. Obstruction may happen due to a missing connection somewhere, like in the epididymis or vas deferens tubes that move and store sperm or previous or current infection, cysts, injury, or vasectomy. Surgical sperm retrieval followed by IVF is very effective in such cases.
After addressing the cause, your doctor will give different treatment options that can help address the issue. Technology has advanced rather quickly and ART procedures like IVF can certainly help you achieve pregnancy with your partner.
