Barrancas del cobre
“Mexico’s No. 1 natural wonder”.
The Barrancas del Cobre are a beautiful and majestic natural scenery. They are located in the state of Chihuahua, in the Sierra Madre Mountains.
This natural system is formed by a series of 20 canyons and ridges, whose magnitude is four times greater than that of the Grand Canyon of Arizona; although different in nature; being narrower, deeper and with abundant vegetation.
The area covers an area of 60,000 square kilometers of rugged territory. The Copper Canyon is crossed by the Chihuahua-Pacific train route known as the “Chepe”. On the Divisadero-Los Mochis section, the train goes deep into the mountains to cross the rugged geography, passes by precipitous cliffs, crosses short and long tunnels and bridges that span mighty rivers.
Legend has it that the ravines of the Sierra Tarahumara were formed during the creation of the world, when the stones were not yet curdled and malleable. The metaphor refers to a Teutonic event that more than 20 million years ago gave rise to this spectacular network of canyons over an area of 60,000 square kilometers.
Among the most important canyons are: Urique, the deepest in Mexico; Sinforosa, where the Rosalinda and San Ignacio waterfalls fall; Batopilas, where some of the most traditional Tarahumara communities live; Candameña, where Piedra Volada and Basaseachic are located (the two highest waterfalls in Mexico) and El Gigante rock, 885 meters high.
