Reggae Toy Plaza in Park Slope
When it comes to Jamaican music, the name that usually springs to mind is Bob Marley. However, the genre of reggae is much more encompassing than just one man’s legacy.
This inaugural historical retrospective and concert event will showcase the origins, evolution and influence of Jamaican music through live performances, archival video elements and contemporary narratives.
Music
Throughout the day, live musicians from around the region play a variety of reggae music genres – from new modern rock reggae to traditional roots reggae. The event features the music of the late legend Bob Marley, as well as contemporary artists like Protoje and Romain Virgo.
Reggae Genealogy celebrates the richly layered and multifaceted cultural legacy of Jamaican music, including its dynamic origins, evolution and global impact. Through song, dance and narrative, this groundbreaking musical showcase delights and enlightens.
The exhibition also highlights the contributions of three female champions of reggae — the “Queen of Reggae” Marcia Griffiths, Patricia “Miss Pat” Chin of VP Records and Cedella Marley of the Bob Marley Family Foundation. They were honored with keys to the city by Plantation Mayor Sortal and Commissioner Rogers.
The exhibition was produced by Island SPACE Caribbean Museum with collaborations from photographers and graphic designers Ajamu Myrie and Maria Papaefstathiou. It is made possible in part by grants from the Florida Department of State, Broward County Board of Commissioners, the Judith Cornfeld Fund for the Arts, the Helen and Frank Stoykov Charitable Endowment Fund at the Community Foundation of Broward and the Frederick A. DeLuca Fund at the Broward Community Foundation.
Arts & Crafts
With a rich blend of entertainment, arts and culture, the festival will showcase Jamaican-inspired activities. From a dynamic arts and crafts area featuring local artists to cultural demonstrations and live dance performances, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Art is an important element of the festival’s mission and vision. VP Records’ “Reggae Music Journey” showcases a captivating array of images and stylized graphics created by local photographers Ajamu Myrie and Maria Papaefstathiou, while Island SPACE Caribbean Museum will host a fine art exhibition featuring works from some of reggae’s legendary figures.
Island SPACE Caribbean Museum is partnering with Broward Mall to present the inaugural historical retrospective and concert event, Reggae Genealogy – The Origins, Evolution & Influence of Jamaican Music.
