Infertility In Male
Low sperm count due to various lifestyle issues and many other causes has led to a considerable increase in male infertility. Male fertility depends on the quantity and quality of the sperm produces. Male infertility is a situation which arises due to the low number of sperms, unavailability of viable sperms, non-motile sperms, declined quality of sperm or is unable to ejaculate.
What is Low Sperm Count?
Low sperm count (scientific name for this is oligozoospermia) is where the ejaculate of the male has less than 15 million sperm per ml. of semen. If a person has low sperm count, it means that it is more difficult for him to fertilize the egg of a woman and help her conceive naturally. It does not mean that the male cannot impregnate a woman. It just means that the chances are reduced. The lower the count, lesser the chance of pregnancy.
What are the causes of low sperm count?
An ordinary man can produce sperm multiple times per day. Sometimes, internal factors like poor health or due to certain diseases, the sperm production process is affected. External factors affecting sperm production are smoking, drug usage, unhealthy diet and lack of exercise.
Here are some of the factors you might come across which could be harming the sperm count:
Heat: Heat directly impacts normal sperm production process. The reason testicles are outside the male body is to reduce the temperature. Taking hot baths and spa can impact sperm production adversely.
Obesity: Obesity is a cause of sterility problem in men. The layers of fat can increase the temperature of testicles, therefore reducing the quality of sperms.
Jobs that require long duration of sitting: Long hours of sitting can increase the heat to the genital area, affecting the production of sperms.
Frequent intercourse: Having intercourse very frequently can develop “demand exceeding supply” situation. Although having intercourse doesn’t affect the sperm count, but excessive ejaculations (2-3 times a day) can reduce the sperm count in a single ejaculate.
Smoking: Every puff you take impacts your sperm health. Sperm count and sperm motility are seen to be low in people who smoke 10-20 or more cigarettes regularly.
Alcohol: Alcohol consumption is known to affect fertility considerably. It lowers the production of sperms and the male hormone testosterone when consumed in excessive quantity.
Stress: Stress and fatigue can potentially decrease the production of sperms.
