The repurposing of drugs is one of the biggest trends in modern medicine. It’s a way to use medicines that have passed the test of time for other conditions while they’re still on the market. One medication that has been repurposed is fenben for humans, a worming medication that’s often used under brand names like Panacur C and Safe-Guard. The drug was originally developed to treat parasitic worms in animals. But it turns out that it could also help fight cancer in people.

Anecdotal stories of patients using fenben to cure cancer have been making the rounds online for some time. However, it’s important to note that most of the time, the person in question was undergoing other conventional cancer treatments at the same time. This makes it impossible to determine if the fenben was responsible for their remission.

In vitro tests conducted by researchers found that fenben depolymerizes microtubules and has anticancer properties. The drug also interferes with glucose metabolism in cancer cells, which leads to preferential death of the tumor cells in vivo and in vitro.

Researchers at the National Centre for Human Genome Studies and Research, Panjab University have been experimenting with fenben to see if it can help prevent cancer from growing. They’ve found that the drug has similar effects to mebendazole, a medication that can treat worms in animals. It stops worms from absorbing glucose, which is what cancer cells need to grow.
