How to Replace GPU Thermal Paste
If you’re a hardcore gamer or overclocker, you probably already know the importance of GPU thermal paste. The gray compound helps transfer the heat from the processor to the cooler, which in turn dissipates the heat through the fan. A well-applied thermal paste is essential to avoid overheating and throttling. However, it can dry out and degrade over time, which means that you will need to replace it once in a while.
Luckily, it’s easy enough to do. First, shut down your computer and remove any power cables connected to the GPU. Then, open the case and remove any screws that secure the card to the motherboard. Next, press the release clip at the end of the PCI Express slot where the card is plugged in. Pull the card straight out, keeping it as level as possible.
Once the card is out, it’s time to get rid of the old thermal paste. You can use rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs to do that, but the best way is to get a special thermal paste remover from Kooling Monster called KLEAN-01. It’s a liquid thermal paste remover that cuts frozen thermal paste like a knife, and it comes with a pair of gloves to protect your hands from the chemicals.
Now that the old thermal paste is gone, it’s time to apply a fresh layer. The trick is to create a thin layer that’s evenly distributed on the processor. You don’t want to create a thick layer because that will increase the physical distance between the processor and the cooler, which will reduce performance. Moreover, you don’t want to apply too little either because it won’t fill all the air gaps between the two.
