FE Exam: When, Where, Registration, Exam Day Tips, and More
Fundamentals of engineering is your first step to becoming a professional engineer. After four years of engineering degree, you get to put to the test what you’ve learned through the FE Exam. Let’s start with the FE Exam eligibility criteria.
FE Exam Requirements:
While you can take the FE Exam 2-3 times a year, you should register at least three months before your exam day to give you enough time to prepare. The exam will be offered at Pearson VUE test centers. You can also check for centers near your home by visiting the NCEES official website. The FE Exam is 6 hours long and offered in the mornings on the weekdays (Monday to Saturday) of every month except national holidays.
Before you register, ensure you’re eligible to take the exam. Some of the eligibility criteria include:
- Having or in the final year of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering (ABET-accredited institute)
- A degree from a non-ABET institute and at least six years of field experience.

How and When to Check the FE Exam Score:
You can expect to get your FE Exam score checked within 7 to 10 days from the actual exam day. NCEES releases exam results every Wednesday. However, you’ll receive an email with instructions to view your score.
If you fail, you’ll receive the scorecard and a diagnostic report. You can use this to analyze your strengths and weaknesses on why you failed the exam.
