Gatland’s Calculated Risks: Wales’ Squad for the Rugby World Cup
This allowed Gatland to appoint an additional defender: Lee Halfpenny is preparing for his third Rugby World Cup alongside George North, who will be the fifth Welsh player to feature in four global tournaments after Gareth Thomas, Stephen Jones, Gethin Jenkins and Alan Wyn Jones.
If we do find injuries, then it’s not that far off, Gatland said. From the very beginning, we discussed with the players that the turning point could be if we take two nines or three tens. If we have a head injury assessment and someone is missing, then we potentially have to make a decision about whether we call someone up, Gatland said.
“We know we took risks. Other teams did the same. You have a weak spot in terms of numbers, but those nines (Davis and Williams) have been strong and we’re sure they’ll be fine. If we get an HIA, we will need to look at it, fix the problem and see what happens.”
Injury issues
There are currently up to seven players on Gatland’s roster worrying ahead of the first Rugby World Cup match against Fiji in Bordeaux on 10 September. But Midfielder Anscombe and No. 8 Faletau are the only team members who did not feature in any of the three warm-up games.
Hookers Lake and Ryan Elias, as well as Lock Daffyd Jenkins, injured during Wales’ home and away games against England and are struggling to prepare for the game against Fiji.
