Read About the Ramadan Series All Year Round
The Ramadan Series was launched in September 2021 and promises to be an entertaining yet informative read for Muslims all over the world. With the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, there is a great deal of discussion about Islamophobia and many publications have been published that depict the conflict in a very negative light. While it can be difficult to tell the difference between fiction and fact when it comes to the Muslim world, The Ramadan Series takes a more realistic look at current events in the region. With the assistance of a number of Hollywood veterans, Derren Brown and Damon Hill, the producers of the series have produced a television programme that provides a realistic depiction of life in the Middle East during the holy month of Ramadan. What can we learn from the conflicts that have taken place throughout history?
The Ramadan Series is based on historical events that took place in the seventh century, when a peace settlement was agreed upon between the Muslims and the Christians in Mecca. During this period the two religions lived together in harmony. Christianity enjoyed the support of the Caliphates, whilst the Muslims gained control of Mecca following the death of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The series traces the journey of the two faiths as they strive to understand each other and form alliances. Throughout the series, we also learn that the relationship between the Caliphates and the Muslims was not always smooth, and that even after the death of the caliphs, the power brokers of the region were reluctant to relinquish power to the moderate Muslims.
During the course of the series, we learn that the rise of the Crusades was instigated by the Christians looking to take back the Holy Lands. This resulted in the death of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, many of them women and children. Another aspect of this series that is worth exploring is the treatment of women in Islam. Although Islam makes up for thirty-five percent of the world’s population, it is a country where women are treated so poorly that they can’t even go to the local supermarket without the presence of a male relative. The depiction of theocratic countries such as Qatar and the Maldives as progressive and secular forces is problematic; whilst the majority of citizens are Muslim, these nations do not allow their women to drive.
The Ramadan Series should really be considering a warning, as it chronicles the rise of Islam, its struggle with the west and its expansionist tendencies. However, the writers do make an interesting point when they point out that Islam is not a religion, but rather a political ideology, which is why it should not be imposed upon people. The writers admit that the aim of the series is not to convey an Islamic point of view, but to raise awareness of the universal challenges facing all humanity.
Although Islamic law does not recognise the right of women to drive, it does insist that their education is equal to men. Religious police are present in some regions, such as the UAE, who enforce Islamic law and religious principles, whilst attempting to introduce western principles into the lives of those who don’t adhere to them. The series highlights the way in which different cultures can co-exist, as long as those wishing to practice Islam are respectable. Although the basic premise is one of Islam’s two pillars, the way in which it is applied varies from country to country.
A new series on Islam will always be popular with believers, especially as they go about daily life and struggle to live up to religious principles. The Ramadan Series brings to light issues that many people do not have an understanding of, in order to raise awareness and debate. By reading articles by this series you can get a better understanding of the fundamental doctrines of Islam, as well as how to apply its teachings in everyday life. As well as this, future generations will be able to read and study stories, which are often previously unknown, which will prove to be enlightening and inspiring.
