Maintaining your Berber carpet: the advice of Moroccan Warm Rugs!

After intense work lasting over a year, Moroccan Warm Rug now has more than 25.000 Berber carpets stored in ideal conditions, dry and cool, so as not to devalue these beautiful Berber pieces: we have 2 warehouses, one in Marrakech, the second near Casablanca.
All our Berber rugs are thoroughly checked, cleaned and washed. They do not present any moth but all have a history and therefore variable wear depending on their age and the use that has been made.
Hand-made Berber rugs in pure sheep’s wool (pure wool is found in particular in Beni Ouarain rugs, Beni M’Guild rugs, Boujad rugs) are certainly solid, robust, and durable rugs over time, but sensitive fiber. Old Berber carpets made of natural wool must therefore be cleaned with care.
The ideal is to air the carpet regularly. The Berber carpet designed with wool does not like humidity! It will prefer dry places. To remove deep dust and mites, you can shake the rug lightly or turn it upside down, leaving it there for two to three hours. The dust will naturally settle on the ground.
You can vacuum it from time to time, but do not insist too much so as not to damage and attack the wool. Too much use of the vacuum cleaner would make the wool much less silky and the Berber carpet would lose softness. Wool is a natural material that must keep its flexibility and density! Remember that your Moroccan Rugs are the true piece of art that requires care and attention.
A stain on your Berber carpet? Act quickly!
Any washing of a Berber carpet should be done in cold or lukewarm water. We recommend never applying a product directly to the carpet. Place the product on a clean white cloth (Ban colored cloths), dab the cloth on the Berber carpet, massage the wool with delicacy or make gentle and regular movements on the area concerned.
But then … which product to use to clean a stain on your Berber carpet?
In the event of stains, a natural stain remover compatible with wool, with neutral pH, can be a solution. Using white vinegar diluted with a little warm water is also a good way to get rid of stains.
We recommend that you use specific products for pure wool or natural products such as sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), which is effective in absorbing liquids. What is more, sodium bicarbonate is biodegradable and non-polluting, it is not harmful to health. Two to three times a year, you can also sprinkle the entire surface of the Berber carpet with baking soda, let stand for at least two hours, vacuum slowly and sparingly, the carpet will regain its shine.
Another tip! Revive the colors of your Berber carpet with diluted ammonia water! Ammonia is a very good cleaner, strong stain remover and disinfectant. Be careful, however, to protect your hands and face well, and to ventilate your room when using this cleaning product.
Finally, once every two years, complete and deep cleaning of your Berber carpet can be done by a professional.
Apply good practices, take care of your Berber carpet, put it in a dry place, protect it from dust, let it breathe, and your Berber carpet will keep all its softness and beauty!
