A decade ago, when Richards was in control of Harlequins and the Blood-gate crisis was raging, he first made this accusation in a closed-door discussion with the Rugby Football Union.
Dean Richards remarked
“It happens frequently during whole competition to use fake blood, stab gamers, repair scars, pose as injured in the front row, and inject participants with anaesthesia, according to Richards in 2019. When inquired about instances, Richards provided seven, notably “RWC 2003.”
“England managed repairs using artificial blood (unknown whether it was a pill or an incision by a member of the healthcare doctors).”
Richards responded that he received the information from a member of the England team when questioned how he knew.
Sir Clive Woodward, England’s head trainer for the 2003 Rugby World Cup, replied to the charge by calling it “total nonsense.”
He declared, “We won every game in Australia. What would make us desire to lie? Simply said, this is untrue. I wonder why Dean brought it up. I’ve never taken part in anything similar. It is laughable.”

Austin Healey
Healey, a well-known England player, first represented England in 1992. Due to an injury to Leicester trainer Bob Dwyer, he was initially signed as a scrum-half but was later changed to fly-half. He participated in the 1999 Rugby World Cup, and five or six Nations competitions, and scored the game-winning try during the 2000 tour of South Africa.
Healey’s performance for the Tigers earned him inclusion in the British & Irish Lions team. Healey’s remarks about Wallaby lock Justin Harrison at the Rugby World Cup 2003 were well-remembered since Harrison stole a critical lineout and played in every match for England up until the summer 2002 tour to Argentina when he was benched.
The versatile back travelled to Australia to serve as an injury replacement for the winning 2003 Rugby World Cup team, but he was never formally named to the team after certain players healed, so despite travelling there, he did not receive a medal for the victory. James Simpson-Daniel
In 2002, when he earned his England debut abroad, glandular fever was discovered in him. Due to a back issue, he just missed being chosen for the Rugby World Cup 2003, but he was still able to participate in the Autumn Series 2004 and the 2005 6N match. He was selected for England’s 2006 tour of Australia, where he scored two tries in the victory over the Barbarians.
He was one of five players sacked by supervisor Martin Johnson after being called up to the England Saxons side to play Italy A, Sicily, in 2008. Due to a persistent ankle injury, Simpson-Daniel confirmed his retirement in 2014. He had nearly missed being selected to the final 30 for the Rugby World Cup 2003 owing to a back issue.
Graham Rowntree
Greg Rowntree joined the Leicester Tigers in 1988 and faced Oxford University in his first game with the first team. He was part of the ‘ABC club’ and achieved significant success. In 1993, he earned his England A, Barbarians, and Midlands debuts. In the 1995 Five Nations Tournament, he won his 1st full England cap versus Scotland.
He also attended the Rugby World Cup 1999 and the 1997 British Lions trip to South Africa. After the 1999 Rugby World Cup, Graham went almost two years without receiving an international cap before a string of standout displays for his club put him back into the mix.
He won the Man of the Match award after England’s 21-15 Cook Cup triumph against Australia during the 2002 6N tournaments. In the 2004 Six Nations, he made a comeback for England, and he was the go-to loosehead prop for the Autumn Internationals in the year 2004. Rowntree participated in the 2003 Rugby World Cup test game in France but was not included in Clive Woodward’s team.
Throughout his time as head trainer of England, Clive Woodward acknowledged that parting ways with Rowntree was among the hardest choices he had to execute. Now, where is he? He joined Munster as a scrum trainer after the Rugby World Cup 2019 when he served as Georgia’s trainer.

Ollie Smith
Smith was selected for the Scotland team in February 2022 in preparation for the 2022 6N Tournament. On June 25, 2022, during Scotland’s A’s game against Chile, he received a cap. On July 16, 2022, in Santiago del Estero during the third test match versus Argentina, he was given his 1st full international cap for Scotland.
Although being a strong favourite of Woodward, as his selection for the Lions in 2005 would demonstrate, Smith was left off the roster owing to a dearth of playing time.
