There have been conflicting reactions to Rugby Australia’s shocking choice to fire Rennie eight months before this year’s France Rugby World Cup.

The decision has been welcomed by some Australian rugby supporters. Like former player Matt Giteau, who thinks new Wallabies coach Eddie Jones is the greatest candidate to “turn things around.”

However, other admirers believe the 59-year-old has been unfairly treated. Including Stephen Donald, an New Zealand World Cup hero, who thinks Rugby Australia “turned” on Rennie.

Once more, time is an issue for New Zealand Rugby because you would undoubtedly wonder, “Right, what are your objectives here Dave?” when a trainer like Dave Rennie showed up.”

“If you were wise, you’d at least have a dialogue, but we know for a fact that when they previously advertised the position for New Zealand head coach, they didn’t have the talk with him at all. For Dave Rennie to be factored back into that game, I believe there would need to be some backtracking and a U-turn, and I would certainly hope that every avenue would be explored in determining who the potential replacement New Zealand coach might be.”

Although it’s possible that Australia’s loss could be New Zealand’s gain, the Wallabies are in good hands now that Rennie is gone.

With Rugby Australia, former England coach Eddie Jones has agreed to a five-year contract that will last through the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour as well as the following two World Cups.

Dave Rennie’s career journey

Having previously coached New Zealand teams including the Chiefs, Manawatu, Wellington, the New Zealand U20, and Glasgow Warriors in Scotland, Dave Rennie is a professional rugby union coach from New Zealand and the Cook Islands as well as a former player. From 2020 to 2023, he served as the head coach of the Australia national rugby union team. Center was Rennie’s position on the field. He was appointed the Australian national team’s head coach in November 2019 and served in that capacity until his firing in January 2023.

At the amateurish and national level

Rennie participated in sports with Wellington, New Zealand’s Upper Hutt RFC.  Because of a reoccurring shoulder ailment, he retired from playing at the age of 27. Rennie was a member of the Wellington Lions. With the Lions, he captured the NPC championship in 1986. In his final role as head coach, he led the squad to their second NPC championship in 2000, which came 14 years later.

At International level

Rennie qualified for the Cook Islands national rugby union squad since his mother was from Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. In 1990, he participated in one non-cap game for the Cook Islands national rugby union team.

Early coaching career

Rennie first coached Upper Hutt RFC after serving as a player for the amateur team.  Prior to taking over as head coach in 2000. He served as the Wellington Lions’ assistant coach from 1999 to 2000. The Wellington Lions won their first NPC championship since 1986 under his leadership in his debut season as head coach. He remained a Lion until 2002.

Rennie first served as the head coach of the Hurricanes Under 23 before being promoted to assistant coach. At the New Zealand international academy, Rennie also served as a coach. Rennie coached the Manawatu Turbos in the ITM Cup from 2005 to 2011, first on a temporary basis. The Turbos finished as the 2011 ITM Cup’s Championship Runner-up under Rennie.

New Zealand U20

The New Zealand national under-20 rugby union team won three straight World Championships from 2008 to 2010 under the direction of Rennie. He joined the Chiefs for the 2012 campaign, and he helped them win their first-ever Super Rugby World Cup. Rennie accomplished this, becoming the first Super Rugby coach in the sport’s inaugural season to claim a championship.

The final itself proved to be a really exciting day. Rennie’s home was stolen, and valuables were taken when he was leading the Chiefs to a 37-6 victory over the Sharks. Sonny Bill Williams, a player for the Chiefs, had experienced a similar opportunistic heist a few weeks previously.
