The Foundations of Hindu Studies area is a collection of core courses, including many required graduate-level courses that are required for most graduate degrees. They provide a basic understanding of the central themes and ideas of Hinduism that form the common foundations of the great variety of traditions and practices under the umbrella of Sanātana Dharma. This area includes courses in various primary texts of Hindu Dharma, such as the Vedas, Vedanta, Yoga, Bhagavad Gita, Dharma Sastras, and systems of Hindu philosophy called Ṣaḍ-darśana.
These courses explore the concept of “tradition” (ie, Sampradāyas) as opposed to “religion,” “oral” versus “textual” traditions, and develop insight into the great variety of forms, expressions, and practices that have emerged in Sanatana Dharma. The mechanism by which Hindu dharma adapts to different places and times, psychologies and dispositions and manages plurality is explored, allowing for the dharmic life and unity of thought underlying the apparent diversity of form and expression.
Emphasizing continuity of thought and discontinuous development, this field of study provides a grounded understanding of Vedic Hindu civilization and culture as a living tradition with a unique perspective on the universe and our place as humans within it, i.e. Vedic Hindu cosmology. In addition, the foundation also includes some comparative study courses that include a preliminary examination of other world religions and philosophies, as well as critical contemporary issues in Hindu studies. This field of study carefully distinguishes between the Hindu paradigm or cosmology and the Western paradigm or cosmology and how each brings different understandings of the same phenomena.
