History of Dehradun
Dehradun is a city in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, located in the foothills of the Himalayas. It is the administrative headquarters of the Dehradun district and was formerly part of the United Provinces. The history of Dehradun is closely linked with that of the Garhwal Kingdom, of which it was a part for centuries. In the 18th century, the kingdom was annexed by the Gurkhas and became a part of Nepal. However, it was soon retaken by the British under Colonel Edward Baillie in 1815. From then on, Dehradun remained under British rule until 1947, when it became part of independent India. Today, Dehradun is a thriving metropolis and one of Uttarakhand’s most popular tourist destinations.
