6 main principles of the trauma-informed approach
The Your Story Counseling Center offers individual, couple and family trauma and sexual counseling for a variety of needs. All of our doctors have at least a master’s degree in psychotherapy and use research-based methods and procedures. Our therapeutic practice for resident therapists provides cost-effective therapeutic solutions. We are passionate and compassionate professionals on a mission to make more people’s lives better and happier every day.
CDC’s Center for Preparedness and Response (CPR), in collaboration with SAMHSA’s National Center for Trauma Care (NCTIC), developed and led new training for CPR staff on the role of trauma-informed care during public health emergencies. The goal of the training was to raise respondents’ awareness of the impact that trauma can have in the communities where they work. Participants learned six SAMHSA principles that guide a trauma-informed approach, including:
Safety
Credibility and transparency
Peer support
Cooperation and reciprocity
Reinforcement and selection
Cultural, historical and gender issues
Adopting a trauma-informed approach cannot be achieved through any particular technique or checklist. It requires constant attention, careful awareness, sensitivity and possibly cultural change at the organizational level. Ongoing internal organizational assessment and quality improvement, as well as engagement with community stakeholders, will help embed this approach, which can be extended to organizational development and practice improvement. The training provided by CPR and NCTIC was the first step for CDC to look at emergency preparedness and response through a trauma-informed lens.
