Caribbean beaches
White sand, clear blue water, palm trees and a cocktail in your hand. As the Riviera Maya is at Caribbean Sea, you will find stunning beaches along the whole coastline. You will find unexplored beaches, but you’ll also find beaches with nice beach clubs to have lunch, dinner or just a refreshing drink, depending on what you prefer.
If you want to go combine a day at the beach with some shopping, the best place to be is Playa del Carmen. The beach of Playa del Carmen is a beautiful beach with many beach clubs and the shopping street (5th Avenue) is only a few blocks away from the beach. If you prefer a beautiful beach with some nice bars and restaurants, but with less people, the beach at Tulum is the place for you! If you want to go there you can even visit the Mayan ruins of Tulum.
Do you want to be Robinson Crusoe for a day at one of the ‘unexplored beaches’ at the Riviera Maya? On the road between Playa del Carmen and Tulum you will find the most amazing beaches.
Cenotes
The Riviera Maya is the place to be for spotting cenotes. A cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting from an underground river or cave of which a part of the limestone bedrock collapsed, so the groundwater underneath is exposed.
This phenomenon you can rarely find on other places all over the world, while the Riviera Maya has more than 1000 registered cenotes and there are a lot which aren’t even explored yet. The cenote are the perfect place to go diving and snorkeling. When spending your holiday in the Riviera Maya this is the best opportunity to spot cenotes.
Mayan Ruins
Do you like the Mayan history? From Riviera Maya you can visit several Mayan ruins. Tulum is the best place to stay, not only because there you will find the beautiful ruins at the beach of Tulum, but also because the other two ruins, Cóba and Chichén Itzá can be reached better from Tulum than Playa del Carmen.
Cóba is 50km from Tulum and Chichén Itzá is 150km away from Tulum. You can reach Cóba and the Tulum ruins best by colectivo, taxi or by own car. For Chichén Itzá it is recommended to go on a tour or to go by own car. For all the Mayan ruins we have one recommendation: try to go there as early as possible, so that there are not too many people yet and the temperature is more manageable for those not used to the tropical heat!
Mexican food
Even if you’re from somewhere outside of Mexico, you’ve probably tasted Mexican food– but is it authentic?
Let’s re-explore the food in the Riviera Maya! Guacamole, tostadas, tacos or ceviche (fish ‘cooked’ in lime juice)..all of course with a touch of spicy habanero sauce, the real Mexican style.
You will find plenty of good Mexican restaurants in Tulum town, Tulum beach and Playa del Carmen, but don’t underestimate the tacos which you can buy on the street or in local Mexican restaurants. They can be really delicious! You will also find plenty of restaurants with international cuisines from all over the world as well.
Riviera Maya’s wildlife
Swim with Turtles, spot exotic birds or find all kinds of reptiles in the jungle or even at the beach.
The Riviera Maya is a perfect place to spot animals. At the ecological centre of Akumal you can go snorkeling and spot turtles. You will find all kinds of reptiles and birds on the Quintana Roo beaches and in the Sian Ka’an Jungle. Also, there are many perfect places for diving and snorkeling, you will find an underwater world full of colorful fish!
