3 Data Science Initiatives Aspirants Can Take for Practice
Data science research is increasingly exploding across the globe in the wake of an unprecedented increase in the amount of data being generated daily. The world is producing data at the rate of 2.5 quintillion bytes per day which is overwhelmingly high. Amid the ongoing pandemic, the rate of production of data has risen further, provided the people’s inclination towards digital, in a world with stringent restrictions on moving out of the house.
Finding an effective solution to the COVID disease is also somewhat dependent on the availability of quality data and its analysis. And therefore, the governments across the world must conduct as much research in terms of analyzing the pandemic-related data as possible, to reach a conclusive solution. But, what is more, important is to involve young college students studying at universities and educational institutes into the research projects. In fact, they must be encouraged to come up with new data science research initiatives to solve the burning issues of the world.
But, the major roadblock to college students carrying out data science research on their own is the lack of financial assistance. And that’s why the WDSI (World Data Science Initiative) came into existence to fulfill the monetary needs of college students.
WDSI Data Science Research Grants Worth $300 Mn.
Under WDSI, university grants worth USD 300 million will be awarded to select colleges and universities across the world, in the form of subsidies on data science accreditation and certifications. The students of the selected universities and institutes will get enrolment into one of the world’s most valuable data science certification program offered by DASCA (Data Science Council of America). Besides, the chosen institutes and universities that impart data science education will be offered big subsidies on data science accreditation by DASCA.
WDSI aims to develop and nurture a data science talent force of 250,000+ by the year 2022. A few universities and institutes from across the globe will be shortlisted for establishing centers of data science excellence within their respective premises, wherein advanced programs in data science will be offered to the students. These will be known as ‘International Centres of Data Science’ and will offer programs in advanced data science subject disciplines such as Machine learning, AI, and Big Data.
3 Data Science Projects Aspirants Can Undertake for Practice
#1. Degree of Rainfall in Different Parts of India
Project category: Visualization
The above link will offer you monthly rainfall insights to 36 sub-divisions of the said country. A few visualization tasks you can give to yourself basis the dataset, comprise:
- Try developing pie and bar graphs for comparing the degree of rainfall across various regions.
- You can draft a line graph for comparison of rainfall by regions over a specified period of time.
- One can execute on preparing an animated choropleth map that would showcase the regions where rain has had happened over a period of time.
#2. Worldwide Suicide Rates
Project Category: Exploratory Data Analytics
The link will take on to a comprehensive dataset comprising in-depth details on suicide rates, HDI (human development index) stats, demographics, and GDP by country, and year-wise. The primary purpose of the said project should be to find out indicators that form a valid correlation to increase in suicides over time.
#3. Medals in Summer Olympics
Project Category: Exploratory Data Analytics
The provided dataset includes details of all the medal winners of the Summer Olympics starting from the 1976 Montreal Olympics to Beijing Olympics 2008. As a data science aspirant, you must try to analyze which country succeeded in winning the most medals over the specified period of time. You should also find out the countries that have performed better over time, also, what countries lost their sheen over time?
To conclude…
Hope the article has provided you with much helpful insights on how to prepare for your first data science job interview, and how the WDSI initiative can help you become a certified data scientist if your college gets selected under the said initiative. Even if the DASCA certifications do not get offered to you through your respective educational institutes, you can visit www.dasca.org to enroll individually for your preferred data science credential offered by the mentioned accreditation body.
