17-4 PH Round Bars: Properties, Specifications, and Industrial Applications

17-4 PH round bars are widely used in industries that require high strength, good corrosion resistance, and dimensional stability. As a precipitation hardening stainless steel, this grade offers a unique combination of mechanical performance and corrosion resistance that is difficult to achieve with conventional stainless steels.

Because of these characteristics, 17-4 PH is commonly specified in aerospace, oil and gas, marine, and high performance engineering applications.

What Is 17-4 PH Stainless Steel?

17-4 PH is a chromium nickel copper precipitation hardening stainless steel. The designation “PH” refers to precipitation hardening, a heat treatment process that significantly increases strength and hardness.

This grade is identified under UNS S17400 and is known for achieving high mechanical strength while maintaining good corrosion resistance comparable to martensitic stainless steels.

Standards and Specifications

17-4 PH round bars are manufactured in accordance with internationally recognized specifications.

Common standards include:

  • ASTM A564 for hot rolled and cold finished precipitation hardening stainless steel bars
  • ASTM A693 for sheet and strip
  • AMS 5604 and AMS 5643 for aerospace applications
  • UNS S17400 material designation

These standards define chemical composition, heat treatment conditions, and mechanical requirements.

Chemical Composition

As per published specifications, typical composition includes:

  • Chromium: approximately 15 to 17.5 percent
  • Nickel: approximately 3 to 5 percent
  • Copper: approximately 3 to 5 percent
  • Niobium plus tantalum: 0.15 to 0.45 percent
  • Carbon: maximum 0.07 percent
  • Manganese and silicon in controlled limits
  • Iron as balance

Copper plays a key role in the precipitation hardening process.

Heat Treatment and Conditions

17-4 PH round bars are supplied in solution treated condition and can be aged to achieve different mechanical properties.

Common conditions include:

  • Condition A (solution treated)
  • H900
  • H1025
  • H1075
  • H1100

Each aging condition provides a different balance between strength, hardness, and toughness.

Mechanical Properties

Mechanical properties vary depending on heat treatment condition.

In aged conditions, 17-4 PH typically offers:

  • High tensile and yield strength
  • Good hardness
  • Stable dimensional accuracy after heat treatment

Lower aging temperatures provide higher strength, while higher aging temperatures improve toughness.

Corrosion Resistance

17-4 PH offers corrosion resistance comparable to Type 304 stainless steel in many environments. It performs well in:

  • Atmospheric conditions
  • Fresh water
  • Industrial environments

It is not recommended for highly aggressive chloride or seawater exposure without proper evaluation.

Machinability and Fabrication

17-4 PH round bars have good machinability, especially in solution treated condition. Machining is typically performed before final aging heat treatment.

The material can be welded using appropriate procedures, although post weld heat treatment is often required to restore properties.

Size Range and Supply Form

17-4 PH round bars are available in:

  • Hot rolled round bars
  • Cold drawn or ground bars

Typical diameter range:

  • From small precision sizes up to large diameters depending on mill capability

Bars are supplied in solution treated or aged condition as required.

Applications of 17-4 PH Round Bars

17-4 PH round bars are commonly used in:

  • Aerospace components
  • Valve parts and pump shafts
  • Oil and gas equipment
  • Fasteners and fittings
  • Turbine components
  • Marine hardware
  • High strength mechanical parts

Advantages of 17-4 PH Round Bars

  • Very high strength compared to austenitic stainless steels
  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Excellent dimensional stability
  • Heat treatable for tailored properties
  • Long service life

Conclusion

17-4 PH round bars provide an excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and versatility. Their ability to achieve different mechanical properties through heat treatment makes them suitable for demanding engineering applications.
